Drugged and shanghaied by rivals onto a sloop, NYC gang member Albert W. Hicks slaughtered the captain and crew, stole their belongings and fled to RI in 1860. He was captured, tried and found guilty of a€œpiracy on the high seasa€. His hanging on 13 July became a celebrated, circus-atmosphere event. To raise money for his family, Hicks told his gruesome story to a publisher. The tale was further magnified through a broadside, his likeness in P.T. Barnuma€™s wax museum and front page newspaper coverage that pushed Abe Lincoln and secessionism aside. Hence we havea€¦Hicks the Pirate.
