This song came out of a writing exercise I use sometimes to jumpstart the process, where I sit down and try to write a song without using the word "I". Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

As a musician, I've played a wide variety of musical genres over the years, and I think that shows in the eclectic nature of many of my songs. And like so many other writers of my generation, I grew up listening to pop and still identify with that label as much as anything. That being said, I tend to believe that a lot of what I grew up thinking of as "pop" music is today probably more at home in the country family than anywhere else. When I first decided to put some of my songs out for others to hear, I wasn't even sure how to classify my music, as far as what genre to call it, and as a result, I've changed that listing here several times, trying to figure out where is the best fit for me. That's where being "eclectic" can be a bit of a curse, but to me, the different musical styles are like colors in the pallette, and I would hate to think that I couldn't use a color, or in this case a sound, just because it comes from a style of music that I'm not generally identified with. It's often fairly easy to identify particular styles, and sometimes even individual artists' influences within any one of my songs, but most of the time those influences change from one song to the next. That variety is what makes writing and recording interesting and fun for me, and hopefully entertaining for listeners.

Story behind the song
It's a total work of fiction, loosely based on the kinds of stories you might hear about people who've made mistakes in their lives and were having trouble getting past them and on with the rest of their lives, or whose lives have been irrevocably changed by an incident which they have no control over. The unkept words the song speaks of are the sometimes unspoken promises we make to other, and to ourselves, about how we should treat others, and how we expect to be treated by others, that are broken each and every day, and how those unkept words affect our lives from that point on.
Lyrics
Unkept Words (G) The old man from down the street Who never found the love he needed He couldn’t help his broken heart He couldn’t find the strength to start A little girl, just six years old Tried to do just as she was told He said she came from out of nowhere Never should’ve happened, no it isn’t fair (CHORUS):In this world, so it seems Unkept words and broken dreams Everything that you get today Tomorrow could up and fade away The man who ran the five and dime One night after closin’ time He took his life and he left a note “What would I do now?” is all he wrote A little man, sixteen years old Afraid to let his feelings show Let the one he loved get away Didn’t even say goodbye (CHORUS) (BRIDGE):So much fear and pain and sorrow Sometimes it just gets out of hand And when it comes again tomorrow You gotta hope it’s not much more than you can stand So many stories in this town So many people tryin’ to bring you down Too many things get in the way Too many things still left to say (CHORUS)
