Story behind the song
This is a song I wrote about my great grandmother. My father sings backup on this with me and is the only time he and I have recorded our vocals together. Oregon symphony's Karen White and Tim Scott perform on violin and cello. Tim was also Harry Chapin's cellist, appearing on his first two albums including Harry's signature tune and top 40 hit, "Taxi"
I read an article in the Oregonian about him, so I called him and asked if he would like to play on my CD. He told me he would "be delighted to...for 150.00!"......I thought it was a good deal.
Lyrics
When I was very young you were very old
and I was afraid to touch you
Staring out the window to another world
I didn't know how to love you
Old woman sitting there why don't you move at all
What is going on in your mind
I was young and didn't understand
Later I would learn that sitting in your chair there was a lifetime
Sitting in your chair there was a lifetime
Tell me some stories that make me laugh and cry
Tell me some stories of old
Tell me of the many ways that your life used to be
I'll remember the stories you've told
I'll remember the stories of old
I grew into a young man you were still around
I hadn't come to know you very well
But I took a chance and asked you things about the life you'd had
And listened for the first time to all you had to tell
There were tales of joy and sadness and times when you were young
You were sweet sixteen a hundred years ago
I'm honored that you shared with me your days in the sun
and I'm sure that there is more I'd like to know
Chorus
You're no longer here but I still carry on
We touch just like the leaves on a tree
Now the face that looks at me from a faded photograph
Is a face that's full of life and history
