The song takes issue with those who feel that only right-wing supporters of the war are true patriots.
I remember when music was an important format for expressing political views. I think it is wonderful that Country Music has revived this tradition, but feel that the views expressed have been a bit one-sided. This song is intended to correct that.
Story behind the song
Intolerance and closed-minds are threats to our American way of life. Feel free to express your views, whatever they may be, but don't tell me I don't love America or support the troops if I disagree.
Lyrics
No, Darryl Worley, I have not forgotten
And who the hell are you to say
That I don't care about those people who died
If I don't think war's the only way
No Darryl Worley, I have not forgotten
Have you forgotten Viet Nam?
Well, if you need reminding what a mess that was
Just go turn tonight's news on
CHORUS
I am a proud American
You can say I'm not, but I still am
I can speak my mind 'cuz the flag still stands for freedom
And If I'm pissing you off, well we're even
Now all you DJ's who say we shouldn't criticize out leaders
And If we do our music should be banned
Don't you know that way of thinking gives you a lot in common
With AL Quaeda and the Taliban
And all you Christians claiming that "God is on our side
And He'll lead us to victory"
Well, the God I worship loves all mankind
And his son is the Prince of Peace
repeat CHORUS
I believe that it's right to fight for liberty
But not for the right to drive gas guzzling SUV's
Now, my father taught me he fought in the Big One
'Cuz freedom ain't free, you gotta earn it
He said I'm proud to defend what the flag represents
Even when that means the right to burn it
So when you go telling me that if I don't agree
With your views, I should pack and move away
Well then, I'm telling you that you don't have a clue
What it is that makes this country great
repeat CHORUS
