Story behind the song
My time at Leith Academy with a bit of poetic license thrown in.
Lyrics
Leithy Shuffle
Composed and recorded around 1988.
I once had a school of thought
That said nothing could ever be the same
And then I reached the age of 12
And found my lessons about to change
My thoughts were going nowhere
And my mind was wandering everywhere
Identity crisis
Its a technical term made to focus the blame
It was so clear to see
The school called Leith Academy
It was so easy to tell
An acronym for hell
An acronym for hell
There seemed so little else to do
In the summertime
But I see I missed the point
Life in Leith was never dull
And school just didnt seem right
Taught to beg
And forced to write
Pointless essays, homework, lines and fights
It was all a farce
I learnt nothing but how to wipe the teachers [arse]
English, science, mathematics
Please Miss
Can I go for a [piss]?
Can I go for a ..?
Well four years passed
Before I saw any signs
Of respect in their eyes
Or maybe it was just because
I had grown to a greater size
You tell me
Scintillating conversation
Soggies on the board
Smokers rights behind the bike shed
Graffiti on the doors
Playtime fashion, mixed with passion
Trends that lived for days
(Never had it so good)
But never made the grade
Well I never thought of leaving
But shackled to a wooden desk
Its difficult to run
Weigh me down with text books
And bury me in sums
Classical literature reads all the same to me
Double-Dutch, its all too much
I carve my name on trees
Lets laugh at birds and bees
Sex education was geared to fleas
Not to please
But then thats all in the past
And lifes drudgery must go on
My current situation
Is hardly more wrong
Still tied to a wooden desk
And taking orders from high above
Treated like a little school kid
Well who am I trying to kid?
I dont know
You know Peter Pan
He never grew to be a man
Well then thats no real surprise
Just take a good close look at me
And dont forget your childhood ties
People have a fascination with money
But its not what Im looking for
Its just a shame that nobody ever wants to take the blame
But Ive already done my time
In a school of thought
That is sublime
Thanks to the Roland D-10 synthesizer and its built in sequencer.
A reflection on the drudgery of school life and how little changes in work life. Flavours of rebellious conformity.
