19. The Sixth Episode (Teucer)
The chorus express their dismay and apprehension. If Ajax is to be buried, it must be done quickly.
Opera in English, in two acts. Based on the original tragedy by Sophocles, and following the structural scenic form of the ancient Greek Drama.
Story behind the song
The Salaminians agree, if Ajax is to be buried, it must be done quickly. Tekmessa arrives with her son, Euryaces, and Teucer gives them heartening and encouraging words, before he goes to make preparations for burial rites.
Lyrics
19. Sixth Episode
Chorus
Let lay unforgotten in a crude tomb, a peaceful dreamer, for ever and ever. You must hurry Teucer, and dig the deadman's funeral hole. The height of the fierce struggle is near by, ready at hand. There will be strife. Suffering.
(Enter Tekmessa with Euryaces).
Teucer
Yes, you are right. And in time to render last rites in homage are a peaceful wife and son.. Here, child, come nearer! I ask that holding locks of hair in your hand, you touch your father, - a sacred asking. Yours,.... your mother's.....and, mine.... Torn from the mother land to vanish without a burial in a strange land; the villainous scoundrel who dares to forcefully tear you away from these remains, I will cut him off from the roots of his family, gods, as I cut off this strand with a sword! Honor him, and not a step away from this place. With all your strength, cling to your father, child. And you - friend, do not stand by in cheerless helplessness. No, intercede. In spite of all, I will soon return, and commit him to the earth.
(Teucer exits)
