Jody Dickey lyric- Barry Morgan music
A Walk Of Tears
For many moons our people dwelled on this land
Now we were driven from our homes by the white man
Over 16,ooo we numbered that day in 1838
As we were force to make that walk
Promises and treaties made by the white mans talks
More land and gold is what they truly craved
I remember my true love, My Cherokee brave
Hunting along our valley and stream
With his bow he brought down a buck to feed our clan
Now all is lost our hopes and dreams
As we were forced off our beloved land
And we walk across these great plains in the frigid cold
Each day we watch the dying of our young and old
How many more will wither and die
As the great spirit watches over us from the sky
While we squaws fill this land with tears of grief
As we try to hold on to our customs and beliefs
But each day gets harder to do
As our numbers dwindles down to a few
My beloved brave and children are gone
All fading in time as time goes on
They say it is a day away to our journey ends
And for our people a new life must begin
Confined to a piece of land
Chosen once more by the white man
But this will not be the life for me
For the great spirit in the sky has set me free
As I lay here and take my last breath
Into freedom I escape with my death
Where Morning Dove will be a fading memory and name
Along with my tears across the great plains
