Story behind the song
Dance of the Kachina Dolls The song The song "Dance of the Kachina Dolls" is based on a dream I had one night about a store full of Kachina Dolls I had been in that day. The store had literally hundreds of different types of Kachina dolls all posed and frozen in different positions. Some in different part of their dance and others just standing their stoic in their regalia. I wondered around the store looking at the hundreds of different types and styles for hours fascinated by the colors and designs reading all the little captions and stories about each Kachina. When I got home I got on the computer and did some research about the origins, meanings and rituals behind the Kachinas Dance. That evening when I fell off to sleep I dreamed was in the store where I had been that day, but it was dark and the owner had locked up for the night. I heard voices and this music start to play in my head. All of a sudden the Kachinas began to move and then they started to dance and dance and danced until the sun started come up and I heard the key in the door and they all froze and went back to their original positions. The door opened and the owner walked in I was frozen also. Then the light came on and I awoke the melody still ringing in my head. I picked up my Native American flute and started to learn the strange song that had kept playing over and over that night. All the next day the melody and the dream kept haunting me until I could record it. When I play the song to this very day I suddenly have the uncontrollable urge to move and I find my feet shuffling and myself dancing around playing the flute thinking of the Kachina dolls dancing in the store at night when all the light are out and the people have left. love and peace Spirit john de boer
Lyrics
Dance of the Kachina Kachinas are the spirit essence of everything in the real world. Their essence is inferred from the steam which rises from food and whose loss does not change the form of the food, to the mist rising from a spring on a cold morning or the cloud which forms above the mountaintop. Kachinas are not deities, but supernatural beings that dwell in an invisible world until they are given form in the parallel human world. There are more than 200 Kachina characters that possess characteristics of real life personalities or represent plants or animals The dance of the Kachina offers the children a real-life connection with the Kachina spirits. Kachinas give the little girls Kachina dolls as a remembrance of the ceremony and to help her remember the messages of the Kachinas Kachinas many times represent spirits of nature. The Kachinas represent game, domestic plants and animals, birds, insects, even death itself. The creative force of the sun and the abstract power inherent in neighboring tribes are visualized as Kachinas. Kachinas are supernaturals, embodying the spirits of living things and also the spirits of ancestors who have died and become a part of nature. Kachinas are believed to possess powers over nature, especially the weather, but higher gods limit the extent of their powers. The Kachinas are not worshiped, but rather are treated as friends or partners who are interested in th the welfare of the tribe. They give substance to the immaterial, becoming in the process intermediaries between the physical and the spirit world.
