Songwriter/Musician?Producer
Producer/Songwiter/Musician Jaz Cee was born Carl Thomas, in 1963 in Paterson, NJ. He moved to New York at an early age and began crafting his talent. As a teenager, he became seriously interested in music. He taught himself to play piano, bass guitar and a few other instruments. He would hear a song on the radio and play it from memory, recording it for his mother to listen to. Jazs' telent comes from parents, who both sing and play instruments. Growing up in a neighborhood where he was exposed to Melle Mel and Grandmaster Flash, he developed a love for Rap. At the age of 16, he moved to South Carolina to live with his grandmother. He began playing keyboards and using drum machines. He writes, arranges and produces music. While he can play gospel and Pop, his love is R&B. While living in South Carolina, Jaz formed, played with and directed several bands. He also worked for two of the largest broadcasting companies in the area. WYNN 106.3 (FM) employed him as an overnight On Air Announcer from 1989 to 1992. The format for WYNN AM 54 was Jazz and Blues with a switch to Gospel at 5 a.m. He did production, live remotes and fundraisers. After proving himself with dedication, motivation and hard work he moved to WYNN AM 54’s Sister station, Wynn 106.3 (FM) in 1990 as the Midnight Maniac. Working as the Assistant Music Director and the Public Service Director gave him the opportunity to truly learn how radio stations are operated. In addition to the live remotes and fundraisers, he volunteered time in the community at the local Boys & Girls Club and Levy Park’s Computer Lab. The format for the station was urban, which gave him new opportunities when doing production, using his creativity and tailoring his show to his listeners. He stayed there until 1992. Jaz really wanted to get back into playing, so he formed a group and began gigging at local clubs. They opened for a few big names at the time, MC Lyte, Me’Lissa Morgan, Lo-Key, Force MD’s even The Drifters just to name a few. During this time, he developed his computer skills, Macintosh and the Windows operating systems. He built a home studio containing Tascam Digital PortaStudio 564, Mackie Mixer, and several sound modules. Recently he upgraded to hard disk recording and added electronic drums and a Triton Studio Workstation Sampler. While Jaz can and does sing, he prefers to stay in the background. When asked what his career is, he answer’s, a songwriter. He worked several jobs unrelated to music. While he did so, he began working with local singers and musicians, further sharpening his skills. In 1999 Jaz went to work for Cumulus Broadcasting’s Magic 94.3 (FM) working weekends from 3-7 pm since he worked a fulltime job during the week. Jaz says he enjoyed coming in after work to do production and live remotes. During his time there he conceived and implemented the Class Reunion Weekends. This consisted of receiving emails from listeners who would give their year and school of graduation. He would then feature songs from those years. He left 94.3 a few months before moving to Atlanta in 2001. The quest continues...........
