Story behind the song
I got a mandolin for Christmas. I don't know what the spoon means. The song is about an old soldier in the civil war who leaves the land he loves down south to be with his loving correspondent among his sworn yankee enemies.
Lyrics
My darling, my love, sent word from above. Don't say goodbye but don't say no. My sweetness, my dear, how I wish you were here. You're so far away from me and don't say no. You can do anything and I won't make up your mind. Don't leave your life behind for me. My heart in my mouth, farewell to the south. She asked me to leave and I won't say no. I don't mind if she asks she to leave. Tell me what good's a life if I can't hardly breathe? So I take to my heels with no time to lose. Tell me what good's a life, what good's a life without you?
