Story behind the song
This unaccompanied setting was written for St. John's choir in Worcester some time ago, while I was at Manchester University, but no live recording exists. This is a virtual realisation and a study of the poetic words will help to reveal its full meaning. The poet imagines him/herself to be an observer at the Crucifixion and draws a message of consolation in times of tragedy. While I am happy to release this for free, if any choir would like to sing it, vocal scores are available. Contact me via my website.
Lyrics
Throned upon that awful tree,
King of grief I watch with thee.
Darkness veils thine anguished face,
None its lines of woe can trace.
None can tell what pangs unknown
Hold thee silent and alone.
Hark that cry that rings aloud
Upward through the whelming cloud.
Thou, the Lord's appointed one,
Thou, the Lord's anointed son,
Thou do'st ask him, can it be?
"Why hast thou forsaken me?"
Lord, should fear and anguish roll
Darkly o'er my sinful soul,
Thou, who once was thus bereft
That thine own might ne'er be left,
Teach me by that bitter cry
In the gloom to know thee nigh.
