Story behind the song
My friend Greg Hester was upset because someone saw one of his demos in a Nashville pawn shop. I told him there was a song in it. He didn't agree but I wrote it anyway. He sang it and stuck it on the end of his "Macon City Limits" CD
Lyrics
Record on the Street
Today I saw my record in a pawn shop
Not how I had planned my first release
It went straight to Demo Hell
But the story I will tell
Is now I've got a record on the street
Looky Ma my record hit the street
You always said that you'd be proud of me
Now the best damn songs around
Are in a pawn shop way downtown
Yea I finally got a record on the street
You can find that little shop down on Broadway
Just a couple of doors from Ernest T's
I'll be living in my car
But at home I'm still a star
At least that shop's in Nashville Tennessee
Looky Ma my record hit the street
You always said that you'd be proud of me
It's not gold record time
But the publishing's all mine
I'm down but you ain't seen the last of me
Yea I finally got a record on the street
