In the winter of 2003 I was driving in the car with my son. We had just finished eating dinner and we were heading to a store. It was almost dark and the snow was coming down pretty heavy. There was a man standing on the corner with a “Will Work for Food” sign at the intersection of the entrance. I parked the car and went over to talk to him. You’ll have to listen to the song to find out the whole story, but by the time my son and I got home the emotions were more than I could control. I cried for three hours while I wrote the song “Work for Food.” It took a month before I could sing it without getting emotional. That one moment in time changed everything and unbeknownst to me, was the beginning of this CD.
I always thought “someday” I would help others on a grand scale, but I have come to realize that “just helping” someone is grand.

Work for Food
Words and Music by G. Bryan Miller
Copyright 2003
My son and I had just finished a meal at a local restaurant
Our bellies were full and we were having fun throwing snowballs in the parking lot
We saw a man standing on the side of the road as we headed for the mall
I didn’t have time to read his sign but the look on his face said it all
I will work for food; I’ll do anything you need
My kids are hungry and we’ve nothing to eat
See I’ve been laid off for a month or two
I just need more time but for now I’ll work for food
As we drove on by something stirred inside and I knew that we had to stop
I parked the car, walked over to him, and we began to talk
Even though I didn’t know if he was telling the truth or have a job he could do
I said I don’t have much except this couple of bucks but I spend it in this store for you
(He Said…)
(Chorus)
It was hard to explain to my son that day why I was crying as we drove away
But you and I know it could happen to us sometimes it’s only a paycheck away
So if you see someone standing on the side of the road remember, it could be you
And if it’s me please remember this song, I’ll be holding a sign up too
(And I will…)
(Chorus) X 2
