Story behind the song
An acquaintance told the writer (Curtis D. Butler) about a serious mistake he made in giving a rose to a girl friend, intending only friendship Produced by Curtis D. Buter
Lyrics
A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much I met a young woman two weeks ago Decided we’ll be friends Friends now and perhaps later we’ll marry She said that’s what she intends I thought I’d give her a beautiful gift To show I had her in mind It was then I decided to give her the rose The very best one I could find A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much I pinned it to the lapel of her coat But it went through the depths of her soul The woman’s emotions were quickly aroused I might as well have proposed I only meant to speak to her eyes But the rose spoke to her heart In my mind I was saying “I’m a friend” In her heart “I want love to start” A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much A rose can mean so much Out of all the flowers throughout the world A rose has that special, that special touch They may say “A rose is a rose is a rose” But a rose can mean so much Next thing I knew her feelings grew strong I discovered the power of the rose Little things can mean so much to a woman I might as well have proposed I had to confess “I’m not ready for that” That’s not what she wanted to hear I never knew a rose could mean so much Until she shed that first tear A rose can mean so much (repeat …)
