Story behind the song
It started with "history repeats itself." I'd been seeing examples of this in the news regarding our country and how it's being run. There were just too many examples to let it go. So I moved it over into the romantic vein to make it a little more palatable.
Lyrics
Number Three You say you’re head over heels in love with me I think that’s so-o-o-o-o nice. Other ears have heard your words before – and it wasn’t Just once or twice. Now Little Darlin, I hear coldness In your laughter I’d say you plannin to leave me hangin Soon hereafter You ask me how I’m sure of my story It comes on good authority Let’s say I know because I spoke with number three. There’s been three good men – sadder and wiser Who came before me And every step they took with you brought them to ruin And though your charms are cranked up past ten They can’t hide what you are doin I know better because I spoke with number three They say that history repeats itself When we don’t look to see The lessons from what’s passed Might prevent a tragedy You say you love me – that would be nice If it were true Just ask the others if they had known then What they would do I know you’ll never break my heart This I say with certainty I’m onto you and your game is all through Because I spoke with Three Number one spoke with two, two spoke with three And then three spoke with me. Hey, it’s one and it’s two and it’s three strikes you’re out Yeah I know because I spoke with Number Three Copyright © 2009 Steve Dockendorf
