You know that kid that spends every day in detention.. We're those kids!
In a society that rewards entertainers for talking about robbing, "fucking hoes", selling drugs, and the normal everyday stuff that's on the radio, you can hear something different in the music provided by The After School Society. Its not very complicated to make a hot song. Copy what the radio plays and switch the drums and you have a hit. The "After Schoolers" would rather create something new, something fresh, something with... SUBSTANCE.
While sampling does play a key role in a majority of the production done, there is a passion beneath the sample that drives it. While they have no problem making a hit, they also have no problem doing something completely left of center.
Drawing inspiartion from everything from Donald Byrd, to Miles Davis, to Tricky, to Bloc Party, to Jazzy Jeff, the DJ/Remixer/Producers have an open ear to music. None in general, just good music.
Even though they've opened for various artists (Mos Def, EPMD, De La Soul, Inspectah Deck, Slick Rick, Pharoahe Monch etc.) and spun at various events including Versionfest 04, RESFest 05 and 06, the screening for the movie "Afropunk" in Chicago, and other events throughout the United States and Europe, as well as Being the resident DJ at the Chicago Art Department and part of the DJ staff at Revolver Record Store, the workaholics still think there is still much to be done, and the fun has only begun!
