Story behind the song
Phil wrote what turned into the lyrics for this song as a poem, back in 1993. It's in the voice of the Norse God Odin, exhorting all who know him to rise to their highest state, not as a slave to him, but as their own person, their own god.
Lyrics
Ascend Verse 1 I know the wind, whose voice it is, And wheresoever, it will blow, All seas I know, all earth below, On eight legs, hence I aways go Chorus Ascend, ascend, by will, That highest tree, And be, the one, No slave, no slave to me Verse 2 From fire and ice, to dewdrop's glow Beginnings breath, to fire's demise, I choose the slain, to lay with Hel, Or drink in halls, where good men rise Chorus Ascend, ascend, by will, That highest tree, And be, the one, No slave, no slave to me Verse 3 I have the birds, that are the night, That speak to me, in both ears, With one ear, I hear that which was The other, that which is yet to be Chorus Ascend, ascend, by will, That highest tree, And be, the one, No slave, no slave to me Verse 4 The triumph of, the racing tide, Upon the shores, where dead men ride, Will seal our bargains, clothed in red, Upon our never, ending bed Chorus Ascend, ascend, by will, That highest tree, And be, the one, No slave, no slave to me
