Louis, a king of some sort, wants to go to war. He tries to convince Jacques, a soldier, to leave for the war-front by the use of emotion, eloquence, and ... authority. Jacques finally leaves for the front, and there is a sense of fatality (the voices of Louis and Jacques can be heard in turns, as in a dialogue).
