Story behind the song
I grew up in Julesburg, Colorado, nestled snugly in the loving Armpit of Nebraska's Panhandle. My more recent New England years--and wardrobe--helped create a few awkward situations on visits back to The Good Life. This tune, unlike most of my others, is largely autobiographical.
Lyrics
(I GREW UP IN THE) ARMPIT OF NEBRASKA By Dwight Lakey Intro I grew up in extreme Northeast Colorado, with Nebraska on two sides (Spoken) That fact's since come in handy, on a few Nebraska rides Verse 1 One spring day in mid-Nebraska I'm out on a photo drive Dressed in a light pink polo shirt and chinos Near this small town's only pool hall; got my tripod all setup From the pool hall door pop two tough palominos The one looks big and nasty and the other short and stout It's clear these fellers take me for a twinkie Big-and-Nasty crosses huge arms; Short-and-Stout gets in my face What you doing hanging round these here parts Pinky? Chorus Hey, I Grew Up in the Armpit of Nebraska We could easily reach The Good Life on a walk Heck, I'd have been a native of dear old Nebraska But the family homestead failed by Chimney Rock Verse 2 Some years later in the noonday sun, The Panhandle is hot I'm walking down the street in shorts and flip-flops My gal and I are starving for a burger and a beer A dark bar draws us smelling strong of brew hops Once our eyes get half-adjusted there's this waitress and her beau The gal looks like the Head Waitress of Hades Boyfriend whispers something shady, Hades nods and heads our way What can I do for you on this hot day, Ladies? Chorus Verse 3 Just last fall I'm cruising 80; geese are heading south in waves Feelin warm and toasty in my fleece and loafers Pullin in a truck stop parking lot; each pickup's got a gun Rifle barrels warm from plucking pocket gophers The first stop is the men's room; I've been on the road too long When I'm done there I'll feel happy as a puppy I meet a big rig trucker just outside the bathroom door, Big Rig grunts, Sign says: You Ain't Allowed Here Yuppie! Chorus Outro So the next time that you're headin' for that rich Nebraska dirt Just be sure to wear an outfit with pearl buttons on your shirt Or a Big Red N! © 2009 Dwight Lakey and Brown Barn Publishing Danville, VT and Julesburg, CO; All Rights Reserved
