Story behind the song
My friend and fiddle player with Hank III was looking to do some recording work and was planning on being in New England around the time I was going to be up there. We met up in November on the Cape and it was cold, raining and not so inviting. We both were noticing the weather and I started calling the project Northern Rain, even though there was no such song ever slated or intended.
Three months later he died of Cancer before the record could be completed. I felt horrible obviously and had wished that I had at least sent him down the demo. But he had left the country for treatment and was incommunicado.
It was tough, and I decided to write the song Northern Rain about his life. While he was on the road with Hank III he met up with a beautiful girl in California. She packed up everything and moved to Nashville just be be with him. They got engaged and then shortly before they were to be married, he found out he had cancer.
Like most musician they travel without health insurance. It is just too expensive with the falling of the music industry. As such they couldn't marry because all of his Doctor's bills would have been left with his new bride.
So there you have it. Topical even to this day.
Lyrics
Northern Rain
Verse 1
Oh Northern Rain, it seems you’ve found
Her troubled heart lying on the ground
You try to take her pain away
But you are only a sympathetic rain
Chorus
She's waiting on that moment for a tattered smile
Chilled to the bone by the rain
Wondering when the sun’s going to say good bye
To that Northern Rain
Verse 2
Her loss is deep. It’s so profound
She changed her life on a wedding vow
But before the words were spoke to bind
He left this world and her heart behind
Bridge
The tree’s the fiddle and the wind’s the bow.
The thunder/lightning accents his every throw
The rain; the tears of missing love
But a smile is the grace from above
Verse 3
See the sun above. See its smiling glow
Oh Northern Rain won’t you let him go.
I know that tears can fall like rain
Ah but someday you’ll get to smile again
