Story behind the song
I used to work in the oil field and it was great. Then came this crazy world of MBA and Lawyers and a whole new attitude kicked in between working folks and the ideals of big business.
I remember sloshing through the mud with the President of Shell Oil and David Bechtel of Bechtel Engineering. They were there to get a job done. They both had cut there teeth and come up through the ranks. Especially the President of Shell Oil who had started his career as a tool pusher and general roustabout in the oil field.
There just was a general nobility and earned respect that was worth a damn. Then came these meathead on 9/11 and they represent nothing but tyranny. No greater good to be served in their actions and in juxtaposition of great Muslims that came before them; they represent naught.
Oh well, Americana Today.
I am conversely proud that I sang and wrote about this way before the downturn of 2007 and 2008. But there is no victory in losing.
Lyrics
Americana
Innocence shakedown
Surrendered away in the night
Reluctant and tearful
It’s gone, its done, it ain’t right
She sits in the darkness
Anecdotally wondering
About trusting and kindness
And all of the good things
That she had believed were Americana today
Americana Today
Overstated performance
And fortunes are made overnight
The trust of the indoctrined
It’s gone, it’s done it ain’t right
There’s more to the dream
Then greed and hourding
It’s extending a hand to
Someone who’s hurting
But you’d rather steal my Americana away
My Americana away
Return of the sultan
The Islamic prayer in the night
The peace of a nation
It’s gone, it’s done it ain’t right
Saladin’s honor and noble compassions
Are completely ignored in the hearts of combatants
without any honor hit Americana Today
Americana Today
