My God He Gave Me Rest.
Vr1
I’m looking back on my life,
As my time is near its end,
I’ve had such a loving wife.
And some real close friends.
The kids that I wanted,
I never got to have,
But I had my God in my life,
Of that I sure am glad
cr
I think I’ve been a good man,
At least I’ve done my best,
And when there’s been too much to bear,
My God gave me rest.

There’s people in this town I’ve known,
Having lived here all these years.
Bob Jones, with his hardware shop.
Widow Jenks, always shedding tears.
I hope they say a prayer for me,
When my body is laid to rest.
As my God I go to see.
They could say I did my best.

There’s Reverend Jones, my lifelong friend,
He’s also been here a while,
I’d stay in church, till his sermons end,
Cause he could always made me smile.
Never thought of himself to much,
Took his food to a poor mans door.
When others mocked his simple touch,
It made him just do more.
br
What is to become of the things I leave behind,
That are so very close to me,
That will plague my mind.
Until my God I see.
Vr4
My old dog, who’s been my friend,
And never let me down.
I wonder how he will fend,
When I’m not around.
The flowers in my garden,
I’ve tended with my hands.
Weeds will come and strike them down,
And overtake the ground.

I think I’ve been a good man,
At least I’ve done my best,
And when there’s been too much to bear,
My God gave me rest.
Vr5
Yep I guess I could go on
About this wonderful place,
Where people live with God in mind,
And families still say grace.
But when they lay me down to rest,
In the cemetery, at the edge of town,
I know I’m with the very best
Buried in it’s holy ground.

I think I’ve been a good man,
At least I’ve done my best,
And when there’s been too much to bear,
My God gave me rest.
My God gave me rest.
