Story behind the song
Written in 1997 for a group recording project that never materialized, this demo was recorded in 1999. Written about someone who was once a good buddy, now not so close, as I got fed up with being taken for granted all the time. Character assassination is a popular songwriting plot device (see Dylan's 'Mr. Jones' or 'Like A Rolling Stone'). Musically it's very simple, but very effective. Thanks to Fluffy for suggesting the guitar lick, which I had to change quite a bit to fit the chords properly. Recorded on the Venerable 144 Portastudio (4 track).
Lyrics
I caught a train, out in the country I saw the faces of the people inside I caught a train, and I’m never returning Go all the way with my ticket to hide You lock your doors, live in a mansion and turn away to your weed and cocaine You live a life, of reckless abandon to live a lie, that you’re feeling no pain I caught a train, out in the country I saw the faces of the people inside I caught a train, and I’m never returning Go all the way with my ticket to hide When we’re together, then I never leave better I swear the air must be staler in there Just like a dream that I read in a letter You’re not rebuilding what you would not repair I caught a train, out in the country I saw the faces of the people inside I caught a train, and I’m never returning Go all the way with my ticket to hide So now you’re left, with all your bangles and bells I hope they bring to you whatever’s in store I pull away, from the clashing of wills now there’s a window where there once was a door I caught a train, out in the country I saw the faces of the people inside I caught a train, and I’m never returning Go all the way with my ticket to hide I caught a train, out in the country I saw the faces of the people inside I caught a train, and I’m never returning Go all the way with my ticket to hide
