Story behind the song
In January 2006 my husband passed away from Leukemia, the following Christmas the family was invited to a Christmas Bazaar at our friends church. I was not working and the children had know idea just how I was making it through the holidays. At the Christmas Bazaar I fell in love with this doll that took my mind off my stress and I was inspired to write this poem - only in a little girl's voice about how I not only won the doll, but my two year old old won a truck, stuff animals and we had fun that day. Although my church never host such events, I enjoyed participating that day and seeing the fun this congregation enjoyed.
Lyrics
We're late, for the Christmas Bazaar!
Let's hurry, get dressed and get in the car.
Auntie Grace is waiting for us to arrive.
They're raffling toys for a fundraising drive.
We entered the church about a quarter of three.
The room was crowded with only one chair left for me.
There I sat in the buzzing hall.
Watching people purchase tickets for chances to win all.
Then I noticed her sitting on a shelf,
this beautiful doll in a hand-crocheted white dress.
I stared at her, glared at her, just couldnt take my eyes off her.
This brown doll with black silk curls,
who had a necklace and a bracelet made of pearls,
She had little red roses in her hair and on her skirt.
Yes, I was in love and just had to have her!
But how could it be?
My mom didna019t have money to buy toys for me.
Christmas had come and Daddy had passed away;
we were barely getting by from day to day.
Then I heard Auntie say, Here are some tickets for you and the kids.
Place them in the buckets for the things that you wish to win.
I shut my eyes tight and said a little prayer,
God let mommy place a ticket for her.
When I opened my eyes I heard the lady say, youa019re number 52 and 53 - let that be lucky for me, I added to my wishful plea.
Mommy handed out prizes to winners as their numbers were called.
You could feel the excitement filling the hall.
1, 8, 33, and 24,
I just couldna019t take the number calling anymore!
The numbers were far from 50 or my 53,
so I felt there would not be any toys for me
Then there was hope and a bit of luck,
number 52 was called and my brother won a yellow truck!
So I sat with a glance and a glare,
staring at the doll with roses in her hair.
I dreamed of hugging her, kissing her, and taking her home,
and styling her hair with my pink little comb
As I dreamed, and wished of how it would be
if that doll could come home with me.
Suddenly I saw dancing, and stomping, and shouting by my Mom
as the lady placed that doll in the white dress in her arms!
Her named had been called from the red ticket she bought.
Not a number but her name, Rachel, had brought Mommy luck!
On the ride home in the back seat of the car,
I sat hugging the doll from the Christmas Bazaar.
As we drove home I saw a house with a manger
with Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus on the lawn.
Then I remembered that Christmas was about the birth of God's son
and the gifts the Shepparda019s had brought this very special one.
Looking out the window at lights hanging on trees,
I began to realize that God had not forgotten me.
After all, Christmas was still 23 days away.
So that night at bedtime, when I knelt down to pray,
I thanked God for showing me a special miracle at the Christmas Bazaar today.
What miracle you ask, and how could it be?
That my Daddy was gone, and my Mommy had no job,
but my brother got a truck and I got a doll.
Most of all I thanked the Angels above,
for showing me that a01CGod is Love.
