Acoustic fingerstyle singer-songwriter; kind of a mashup of Leonard Cohen, Nellie McKay, Stuart Davis, Jason Mrasz, with a little Martin Simpson thrown in. Working on my CD, that I hope will be out this Spring: "The Suburban Book of the Dead."

Story behind the song
Driving screaming kids across country with a million cries of "I didn't do it!" from the back seat caused me to start making up and singing this song aloud just to keep from going crazy. It briefly startled my kids into good behavior but only briefly. I had the entire song written by the end of the trip, but recently changed the last verse to reflect some deflections of responsibility in the adult community. . . . When I was a kid, I grew up listening to Tom Paxton, one of the cleverest songwriters lucky enough to have been recorded, and this is my homage to Tom. His music has percolated in my head and heart all these years and I would give this one to him in return if I could. Thanks Tom! drDave
Lyrics
It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me. It must have been somebody Who looked like me. It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me No way It couldn't have been me. It was not I I spent a half an hour On my alibi It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me I'd say So who drew with The lipstick on the walls? Who painted peanut butter On the piano keys? Who cooked spaghetti With my tennis balls? And played a DVD Made from a slice of cheese? t couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me. It must have been somebody Who looked like me. It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me No way It couldn't have been me. It was not I I spent a half an hour On my alibi It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me. I'd say. Then who poured All the fish in my guitar? And why are all The firemen at the door? Don't tell me that The dog can drive the car. Or someone superglued your sister To the living room floor. t couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me. It must have been somebody Who looked like me. It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me No way It couldn't have been me. It was not I I spent a half an hour On my alibi It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me I'd say. And they grow up almost instantaneously And then they run for Congress Or the Presidency But if you mention "Where's my pension?" Then you'll see They stand and point their fingers Like when they were three. t couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me. It must have been somebody Who looked like me. It couldn't have been me It couldn't have been me No way It couldn't have been me. It was not I I worked with Mr. Ponzi On my alibi. It couldn't have been me. It couldn't have been me I'd say.
