Story behind the song
I had the intro/chorus chords before I got the lyric. I don't usually come up with riffs and things, I normally go in with a lyric and no pre-conceived musical ideas. But this was one of those progressions, together with the slide guitar figure, that I had kicking about. I felt the lyric and mood of the words fitted my initial idea, so it came together from there really. I wanted a harder edged sound for this one, and then it was a case of fitting in the synth layers to give some smoother contrast. The instrumental is split into 2 sections, with the plaintive oboe/synth bit first followed by the rip-roaring guitar. This is a nod to a song by Monaco called 'What Do You Want From Me', which does a similar thing, although I notice it's a format Toto often used too.
Lyrics
I still need you on those nights When the fight has upped and gone But these feelings still live on When it’s dark where your light once shone This power over me You’ll never lose no matter where But to pity is too easy When it’s too difficult to care Maybe in the future these feelings are going to fade Maybe it’ll take the edge off the night and I won’t feel alone and afraid Maybe it’s time to stop speaking as all the words now said are tokens Maybe it’s all best left unsaid like all the stories left unspoken Don’t even want to touch you In case I couldn’t let go Just like the thoughts in my head Of you my heaven's red rose I give you everything and nothing You give me everything and more Seems I’ll be looking forever To find what I had before Copyright July 2000 Lyrics by Peter Fellows
