Story behind the song
It was 1987-1988 and everybody need a Power Ballad; this was my entry. Mike played the super-clean intro through a combination of Rockman and his Sunn amp and did the guitar fills at the end; I did the solo in the middle with my trusty '81 Hamer Special, Carvin X-100B and MXR Dyna-Comp. A friend from school, John Zipperer, helped out with the background vocals. My favorite part has always been Gordon's little 6-string bass solo right before the second verse.
Lyrics
Stay With Me Tonight
I been starin’ at some photographs
And most of them were of you
Took my mind back to another time and place
Before my world was torn in two
Living without you
Hurts more than you could know
Now that you’re here with me
I just can’t let you go
Won’t you stay with me tonight
We’ll talk about the future tomorrow
The night is falling, the time is right
Won’t you stay
With me tonight
All those lonely times and broken dreams
Fade away with your touch
I never knew that one single night
Could ever come to mean so much
This might be our last chance
Don’t let it slip away
I need you here beside me
To face another day
Won’t you stay with me tonight
We’ll talk about the future tomorrow
The night is fallin’, the time is right
Won’t you stay
With me tonight
You don’t have to say you love me
You don’t have to stay forever
All I’m asking for is just one night
So think it over
Think it over won’t ya
