At Crisol de Cuerda Fiddle Camp 2009 I saw this beautiful falcon appear out of nowhere over the nearby lake. I wrote a poem in response and asked Galen Fraser (also at the camp) to come up with a melody. This song is the result.
Lyrics
Curling down from the mountains
Swirling ballerinas of mist
Patches of light falling drizzle
Cloud banks that twirl, spin and twist
Then in a shaft of sunlight
Revealed in a momentary break
The power and beauty and mystery
Of a falcon over the lake
I doubt it was fish he was hunting
His head darting side, front to side
He seemed out of place over the water
As on the warm current he glides
The waves leapt to catch him napping
But they never came close to his wake
He soared back skywards so proudly
The falcon over the lake.
I stood there earthbound in wonder
At this master of wind, cloud and sky
Knowing wings are reserved for angels
So what chance I'll ever fly?
Below on the rocks, I stood dreaming
The airman in me, just a fake
For I never will soar, weave and dive like
The falcon over the lake
The power and beauty and mystery
Of the falcon over the lake
He soared back skywards so proudly
The falcon over the lake
No, I never will soar, weave and dive like
The falcon over the lake....
Over the lake.
