Story behind the song
in 1848 Stephen Foster wrote this song. the melody got stuck in my head one day. I Googled Stephen Foster and learned he wrote this song as a young man. the lyrics are romantic and full of melancholy; perfect for the times. yet one of the verses is very wacky and another is dream- like; almost opiate. I enjoyed playing this song. I like old music , but I never thought I would go this far back.
Lyrics
I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee I'm going to Louisiana, my true for to see it rained all night the day I left, the weather was so dry the sun so hot I froze to death; Susanna, don't you cry. oh, Susanna, oh don't you cry for me for I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee I had a dream the other night when everything was still I thought I saw Susanna coming up the hill the red, red rose was in her hand, the tear was in her eye I said I'm coming from Dixieland, Susanna don't you cry oh, Susanna, oh don't you cry for me I could from Alabama with a banjo on my knee
