Story behind the song
based on a sermon by Bob Pittman at FBC, Muscle Shoals... he was preaching from Mark 5 regarding the woman with an issue of blood, and mentioned the phrase 'the hem of Him' - he stopped and said, 'My, wouldn't that be a great title for a sermon!' I thought, 'It would be a great title for a song!' The first verse talks of how the power of Jesus was so great that it extended even to the hem of His garment to change lives. The second verse extends that even further to his robe after His crucifixion, and takes poetic license to presume that the soldier who gambled for and won the seamless robe was later the centurion who acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God; the third verse switches views to first person plural and talks of how we'll someday spend eternity 'singing praises at the hem of Him' The chorus for each verse summarizes that if we're dissatisfied with the world's offerings, and if our own righteous 'rags' are growing thin, we can hold on to the power found in His hem
Lyrics
Verse 1:
Somewhere on a seashore in Judea
A woman pushes through a swarming throng
She will not be denied to be by the Master's side
And receive the touch she's needed for so long
So reaching out in faith she touches Jesus
And suddenly she feels the change within
And without a doubt she knows that her faith has made her whole
Just by having touched the hem of Him
Chorus:
When the world that you hold on to
Has shattered all your dreams
Just reach out and touch the hem of Him
Whose garment has no seams
When the rags of righteousness you wear
Are growing kind of thin
Just hold on to the hem of Him
Verse 2:
And somewhere on a dark and lonely hillside
A soldier stands and clutches to his breast
A seamless linen robe covered with the blood that flowed
From a man he knew was diff'rent than the rest
And he can hear the sound of distant thunder
And in the sky the sun is growing dim
But he calls the Savior's name and he'll never be the same
After having touched the hem of Him
Chorus:
Verse 3:
And someday when our life on earth is over
In the twinkling of an eye we shall ascend
In His likeness we will be and we'll spend eternity
Singing praises at the hem of Him
Chorus:
