Story behind the song
yoikes.. this one almost became an instrumental.. the singing still just sounds terrible to me.. but oh well... it was inspired by this girl i saw on oprah (yea yea i know, i'm turning into a wee old housewife heh) this one time, i think her name was katherine or something - anyways she didn't do work in northern uganda, but in sierra leone in africa - basically going to the camps and trying to negotiate with the groups abducting children - either to fight, or as sex slaves - I was amazed how katherine (if that was her name) was so young like 21 or something, and brave to just go about confronting these individuals, and working hard to get children back to their familes. it made me feel more useless, as i sat back in my living room sipping tea and thinking about it... it's just amazing how naive we can be in the west, to the world outside of us.. we've almost come to expect a certain living standard, and can pass of images flashed across our tv screens as some far off place.. it's still this world, and i think collectively should still be all our responsibility (save US foreign policy tactics). i think it's crazy and really cool how some people can devote their lives to making others lives better... and incredibly humbling. with similar situations occuring in northern uganda (with the LRA, or Lords resistance army), it's only fair they get a spotlight (if only a small one) too... I hope situations in africa can be rectified in the near future...and that doesn't mean a call for war. it had more africa specific lyrics on the outset - but you start to sound like bruce cockburn if you start singing about the children and stuff.. so i hope you don't mind it's informal non-specific-ness.
Lyrics
forget me... forget me.... like the soft wind thru the trees. forget me... forget me.... like an ideal without belief. forget me... forget me.... like an onslaught without retreat. forget me... forget me.... like the division where day and night meet. forget me... forget me.... like a greased wheel that doesn't squeak. forget me... forget me.... like a year gone by... without a week. forget me... forget me.... like an oceanside without the sea. forget me... forget me.... like a new beginning that doesn't repeat.
