The first movement of my horn and piano concerto, featuring elements different musical styles ranging from American classical music to recitative to horn calls and other brass repertoire.
I am a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a degree in music composition. This goes without saying but I love music (listening, composing, studying, performing).

Story behind the song
Ironically, this first movement began after the second was completed, once I decided I'd like to write a multi-movement horn and piano piece. Although originally devised as a concerto featuring the horn, it took on a life of its own and turned into a work featuring both instruments with relatively equal importance. Having no direct influences, it is difficult to characterize this movement satisfactorily. However one might say it is an eclectic blend of different musical elements. Here, I have unconsciously incorporated styles reminiscent of American classical music, popular music, liturgical recitative, and various brass repertoire including El Toro Caliente, En Fort, and the ubiquitous horn calls. It is also a challenge for the hornist, who, in addition to various melodic and registral difficulties, is instructed to utilize various special effects such as stopped horn, muted horn, glissandi, and natural horn (where there are no valve changes and only notes of the harmonic series are played).
