I'm an amateur with no plans to be anything else. I don't write much these days, but in my younger, less stable days I felt moved to write songs to express what was in my head.
Story behind the song
The bridge part of this song was taken from another song I'd written during the same time period as "...and the Horse You Rode Out On." I wanted to try my hand at writing from the point of view of a character rather than being purely autobiographical, though of course the bridge was based on my own experience. This song is about someone who was burned by a past love and lets his doubt and hesitance sabotage his current relationship.
Written 1997, with the bridge part taken from another song written in 1994
Lyrics
I can wait, I can stall
I can stay within these walls
Glass will break, plaster falls
I can stay within these walls
The whole world is open season
The whole world is rhyme as reason
The whole world is trust in treason
There's a hole in my jeans where the knees became frayed
There's a look in your eyes as you're turning away
I can blame, I can fault
I can stay within these walls
Glass will break, plaster falls
I can stay within these walls
The whole truth is still deceiving
The whole truth is disbelieving
The whole truth is lies and leaving
There's a clock on the shelf, runs a few minutes late
There's a look in your eyes as you're turning away
You said forever- you didn't mean it
You said love- you didn't mean it
You said all I need- you didn't mean it
You said goodbye-
I can shake, I can cough
I can stay within these walls
Glass will break, plaster falls
I can stay within these walls
The whole point is vague and fleeting
The whole point is so misleading
The whole point is never needing anyone
There's a space in the air, words that I didn't say
There's a look in your eyes as you're turning away
