Story behind the song
Opening music is a folk lovesong being sang by young Misha Gorbachev in duo with his classmate pretty Luba Gruchenko. Here I would like to emphasize, that all names in this work, except only few, are names of real people who still exist or existed. I altered their characters for dramatic purposes. Scene is opening to a village gathering to celebrate return of Misha’s father Sergei ,from the War. Misha is anxious to learn about his father’s experience in the War, but Sergei is reluctant to talk about it and gets a little upset and chocked up, just outlining the horrors of the war. Grandpa Pantieley giving his advice and mother of Misha is complaining that Misha is growing too fast and is afraid that she is losing him. Misha is soothing her with assurance of his devotion to her. Alexei, friend and co-worker of Misha bids everybody to cheer op from the serious discussion and asks Luba to sing about her pet The Dragonfly. After that it gets a little serious again when Misha reminisces the hunger they had to endure during the war. Again I have to remark, that a song about a hunger and black bread was actually written by Mikhail Gorbachev, who among other, was a very accomplished balalaika player. Closing scene starts with Misha’s promise to do utmost to stop the hunger of his people who he loves. Whole village is cheering and with a promise of help the act is ending on uplifting note.
