Story behind the song
BETWEEN THE YEARS OF 1986 & 1989, I WAS LIVING IN SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA. IT WAS LATE ONE SUMMER NIGHT WHEN I CAME UPON A YOUNG LADY SITTING ON A BENCH NEAR THE ENTRANCE OF THE SEAL BEACH PIER. SHE WAS CRYING AND OBVIOUSLY SCARED. I ASKED HER IF SHE WAS OK AND AT FIRST SHE SEEMED APPREHENSIVE ABOUT ANSWERING BUT, SHE SAID, "MY FRIEND MET A BOY HERE AND TOLD ME TO WAIT HERE UNTIL SHE GETS BACK. ITS BEEN A COUPLE OF HOURS AND SHE IS NOT BACK". I ASKED HER IF SHE WANTED ME TO WAIT WITH HER UNTIL HER FRIEND GETS BACK. SHE SAID "WOULD YOU MIND?" HER NAME IS MARY. WE WAITED FOR AWHILE BUT HER FRIEND OBVIOUSLY WAS NOT IN A HURRY. WE ENDED UP PLAYING ON THE PIER BEING FLIRTATIOUS, DANCING, SPINNING, ETC. DURING OUR WALK I LEARNED THAT SHE WAS VISITING HER FRIEND FROM SOMEWHERE IN KENTUCKY (SHE TOLD ME BUT I CANNOT REMEMBER). HER FRIEND FINALLY CAME BACK. WE KEPT IN CONTACT AND HAD A FEW ROMANTIC EVENINGS BEFORE SHE WENT HOME TO KENTUCKY. SOME TIME PASSED. SHE CALLED ME ONE DAY AND TOLD ME SHE WAS PREGNANT. WE TALKED FOR A MINUTE AS THE FEAR SHOT THROUGH MY BODY. FINALLY I TOLD HER TO GIVE ME A DAY OR SO TO THINK AND CALL ME BACK. SHE ALSO GAVE ME HER NUMBER AND TOLD ME I COULD CALL HER COLLECT ANYTIME TOO. I WROTE THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF ONE OF MY ART PADS. DURING THE NEXT TWO DAYS, MY ROOMMATE WAS ANGRY BECAUSE SOMEONE I THOUGHT WAS MY FRIEND HAD RAN UP OUR PHONE BILL TO THE TUNE OF ABOUT $300.00 AND BAILED. THE ROOMMATE THREW SOME OF MY THINGS SUCH AS MY DRAWINGS AND PAD, AND PAINTINGS AWAY WHILE I WAS AT WORK. WELL, ANYWAY TO MAKE IT SHORT THE NUMBER WAS ON THAT PAD. I WAITED FOR HER TO CALL ME BACK BUT SHE DIDNT. SHE PROBABLY FELT LIKE I WOULD HAVE CALLED HER IF I WAS GOING TO BE APART OF THE CHILDS LIFE. ANYWAY, I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR HER/THEM FOR THE PAST (BRACE YOURSELF) 23 YEARS. NO LUCK YET. I AM MARRIED WITH THREE CHILDREN & LIVING IN TENNESSEE NOW. MY WIFE HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE SITUATION AND IS VERY SUPPORTIVE. I AM ABOUT TO TAKE A TRIP TO KENTUCKY AND SEARCH VITAL STATS, ETC. THIS IS THE INSPIRATION TO THE SONG.
Lyrics
It was a lovers moon and underneath a palm tree I saw her by the pier somewhere down on Seal Beach A lady sittin' on a bench her face flooded with tears in a strange city And trembling with fear She said my name is Mary And I'm waiting on a friend Would you wait with me, please til she comes back again So I sat down beside her, we began to talk Before too long, we went for a walk C-1 (Oh that) Warm summer night In a California breeze We were dancing on the pier Somewhere down on Seal Beach The moonlight was skippin' on the waves of the sea We were fallin' in love..... Somewhere Down on Seal Beach We were laughin' and kissin' and we held each other tight Two young lovers And it just felt right I was held in the arms of a Kentucky girl-friend But then she went back east And we came to an end We were young, I was crazy And we got alittle wild Then came the call She was gonna have a child And I was young, I was scared I was trembling with fear I still remember her face After all of these years C-2 (Oh) I remember those .... Long summer nights In a California breeze When we danced on the pier Somewhere down on Seal Beach I was held in the arms of a sweet summer friend We were wishing on the stars The night would never end..... Bridge: Now I've been searching for years For a child I can't find She would have raised them without me A son or daughter, are you mine? I could never show enough, how sorry I am For not being there, but in some west coast town... C-1 (Oh that) Warm summer night In a California breeze We were dancing on the pier Somewhere down on Seal Beach The moonlight was skippin' on the waves of the sea We were fallin' in love..... Somewhere Down on Seal Beach The moonlight was skipping on the waves of the sea We were fallin' in love… Somewhere down on Seal Beach The moonlight still dances on my memory Where we made love… Somewhere down on Seal Beach © Copyright 2009 Eddy S.
