Story behind the song
Peace in the Valley was originally written by Thomas A. Dorsey (1899-1993) in 1939 for his friend, the incomparable Mahalia Jackson. It was an instant legend. Jackson's recording was the first to sell more than one million copies-an unheard of feat at that time. In the years to follow it was recorded many more times by performers such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and most recently Faith Hill. Here arranged by Larry Shackley, the true gospel spirit shines through.
Lyrics
Well, I'm tired and so weary, but I mus go along, 'Til the Lord comes and calls me away. Well, the morning is bright and the Lamb is the light, and the night is as fair as the day. There will be peace in the valley for me someday. There will be peace in the valley for me, O Lord I pray. There'll be no sadness, no sorrow, no trouble I see. There will be peace in the valley for me.
