Story behind the song
The musical is based on the book, "The Night Cometh" by Rebecca Winter. The Tappan brothers were successful businessmen who used their money and influence to fight for social justice. At one point, there was a bounty on the head of one of the brothers. The story focuses on the moment when his house was trashed by a mob.
Lyrics
Song: {Mrs. Lewis} What's a bit of broken glass As long as I have you?
What's a bit of shattered glass? We know our God is true
Next to broken hearts that call that bit of shattered glass
Is nothing... nothing at all.
Sarah: What's a bit of pretty glass As long as I have you?
What's a bit of colored glass? We know our God is true
Next to broken hearts that call, that bit of shattered glass
Is nothing... nothing at all.
I will not cling to things that bind
My heart to earth, or grip my mind
Let the rabble shatter all I have
I'll have no blood upon my hands, if only slaves go free
And free hearts soar
I pledge my life, My heart my all
To troubled people, hurting souls,
Let the rabble burn my life's debris
I'll have no stain upon my life, if women live their lives
In dignity
{Together} What's a bit of broken glass...
