Story behind the song
Remembering the many times I drove back to Tampa when I lived in Cincinnati. Always looking forward to getting home and driving through the night to get there.
Lyrics
It was a straight shot down I-75 14 long hours of driving And plenty of alone time Roaring through the night Streetlamps marking towns in the darkness Winding up and down the mountains Wandering through the fields of grain Daydreaming past the herds of cattle Struggling through the pouring rain I drive exhausted and alone Across the miles toward the sunny bay Just for the glimmer of hope that someday I’ll see you again Can’t you see that I’m not gonna die Not gonna die Not gonna die Asleep at the wheel is no way to drive When you’re doing 90 down I-75 It was a long day at work Worked the 7-5 Had class in the evening But I’m not gonna die (no way) No Doze and Chocolate and coffee and Mountain Dew and McDonalds and Slim Jims and Steak-N-Shake and Megadeth to get me by Can’t you see that I’m not gonna die Not gonna die Not gonna die Asleep at the wheel is no way to drive When you’re doing 90 down I-75
