Story behind the song
The idea for this song emerged after a night of heavy jamming (and drinking) at a gig in Lagos, Nigeria about 1996. My good friend and Jazz Pianist Muyiwa Majekodunmi and I came up with the idea originally titles "Gulder Reacting Adversely" Gulder for those not in the know is a Dutch Beer of extreme popularity in West Africa (and strangely enough totaly unknown in Holland- thats another story. On the death of Fela Kuti, the legendary Nigerian Composer, Saxophonist and Activist in 1997, I decided to convert the song into a Tribute and there you have it. The word Abami is a Yoruba word for Strange Spirit, which among the die-hard, following of Fela Kuti, which alongside others like Augustine, Ogbologbo-Agbalagba (Aging Rough-neck) were fond nick-names bestowed on the great man.
