Story behind the song
David Cox is a regular contributor to the rec.music.makers.songwriting newsgroup. He posted his lyrics in the public domain and asked for members of the group to create their own version. This is mine.
I took the song to be more downbeat then did David. In my opinion the lyrics called for a Country treatment. Although I am not happy with my voice, it is good enough for a demo of the concept and my vision of David excellent words.
The acoustic guitar is a Martin. The electric is a 1979 Fender Strat. The Bass is a Warwick fretless. The drums are sequenced and played through a Roland 1080 synth module. It also creates the organ sound.
My wife added the backup vocals, one quick take, as one of the kids feel out of bed.
I've been playing around with the mix on the song. Changed the drum sound in this recording as I was not happy with how snappy the drums patch I used on past versions. Still not happy. May have to re-write the sequence completely.
Lyrics
Verse I
My legs they are weary, the road is long.
But my lips they are laughing as I carry this song
I count my possessions and my soul is free
I own little of nothing and nothing owns me.
Chorus I
I'm one for the road, one for the road.
A song for my carriage, the sun for a load.
I count my possessions and my soul is free.
I own little of nothing and nothing owns me.
The sun is shining and the heavens are bright.
And there's plenty of ground for to stay through the night.
I owe no one and my soul is free.
and the song I am singing, well its carrying me.
Chorus I
I'm one for the road, one for the road.
A song for my carriage, the sun for a load.
I count my possessions and my soul is free.
I own little of nothing and nothing owns me.
Verse III
My parents were drunkards and didn't want me.
But my lips are smiling and my soul's still free.
And I'm thinking my father said more than he knowed.
Come on my darling let's have one more for the road.
Chorus III
I'm one for the road, one for the road.
A song for my carriage, a son for a load.
I count my possessions and my soul is free.
I own little of nothing and nothing owns me.
