Lake Fork Verne and his banjo. Original country and Americana songs. Songs of yesteryear, growing up during the great depression 1930's and the way things are
Just me and my banjo...writing and singing about how things used to be long ago in the 30;s and 40's and how those experiences affect today. I started out wanting to get on record these stories and songs for my grandchildren; but after doing it for a while, others have expresses interest so we are recording and putting them out there.

Five Kernels of Corn by Hezekiah Butterworth Chords tabbed by: (c) Verne Garrison 2009 Banjo Tuned E, Capo 1 Key of D D G D 'Twas the year of the famine in Plymouth of old, A The ice and the snow from the thatched roofs had rolled; D G D Through the warm purple skies steered the geese o'er the seas, A D And the woodpeckers tapped in the clocks of the trees; D E7 A And the boughs on the slopes to the south winds lay bare, D G D and dreaming of summer, the buds swelled in the air E7 A. The pale Pilgrims welcomed each reddening morn; D A D There were left but for rations Five Kernels of Corn. G D Five Kernels of Corn! G D Five Kernels of Corn! E7 A D But to Bradford a feast were Five Kernels of Corn! D G D "Five Kernels of Corn! Five Kernels of Corn! A Ye people, be glad for Five Kernels of Corn!" D G D So Bradford cried out on bleak Burial Hill, D A D And the thin women stood in their doors, white and still E7 A. "Lo, the harbor of Plymouth rolls bright in the Spring, D A D The maples grow red, and the wood robins sing, G D The west wind is blowing, and fading the snow, E7 A D And the pleasant pines sing, and arbutuses blow. G D Five Kernels of Corn! G D Five Kernels of Corn! E7 A D To each one be given Five Kernels of Corn!" Tag: A D To the Thanksgiving Feast bring Five Kernels of Corn!
