Story behind the song
At the end of a summer job far from home one day, I discovered I was broke and had no way to get home. Back then, there were neither cell phones nor call waiting and couldn't get through home to call for a ride. I walked instead and the inspiration for this song was born.
Interesting note: an earthquake happended while tracking the vocals in LA. Towards the end of the song (if you have headphones), you can hear the rumble.
Features the legendary James Gadson on drums.
Lyrics
No one was home when I called for a lift
Checked my pockets for bus fare
There was nothing but lint
Took me two and a half hours
Living seven miles from work
Walking down Newland
(Somewhere it’s raining)
Walking down Newland
(Somewhere it’s raining)
I’m west on Westminster
Leaves brush my face
Afternoon sun is burning gray
As the cars speed on by
I knew someday I’d write this
Back then I didn’t know why
Walking down Newland
(Somewhere it’s raining)
Made a turn at a burger stand
The last of its kind
Started walking down Newland
And didn’t dare look behind
Ocean breeze blew my clothes
As I crossed the 405
Walking down Newland
(Somewhere it’s raining)
And I felt so alive knowing there’s pain (far away)
My whole life ahead of me and love for Libras never ends
What could have happened doesn’t matter
When what’s happened so far is so much better
Finally reached my street – where I live you don’t walk
Mama asked why I was so late
Life was so easy then, that’s why I like talking about
Walking down Newland
(Somewhere it’s raining)
Sometimes it’s a cold and lonely world out there I swear
Let it rain…
