Story behind the song
Composed in Greece while vacationing there with my wife. First real long trip away from family and friends
Lyrics
To Get Back (Home) (03/10/83) (V) I’ve flown across the oceans, sailed the seven seas. Stood amongst the Rockies, walked the vast prairies. Fished the rugged shorelines from Portland to Saint John’s. And when those trips were over only one thing was counted on. (Chorus) To get back home to old familiar scenes. Well known kin and friends. Watch my own TV. Tune in my favorite DJ, on my radio. Sit beneath my shade tree, watch my flowers grow. (V) Since we’ve upped and married I guess we’ve been around. The Parthenon, Empire State and little country towns. But it made little difference no mattered where we roamed. When we turned ourselves around it was so good to get home! (Chorus) (V) No matter where I’ve traveled we’re basically the same. Concerned about the same things, enjoyed the same old games. We try to live that turn of phrase, “When in Rome.” But the thing that is most common , it’s so great to get home! (Chorus) (Chorus) To get back home to old familiar scenes. Well known kin and friends. Watch their own TV‘s. Tune in their much loved DJ on their radios. Sit back ‘neath their shade tree, watch their flowers grow. Copyright © 2009 by Douglas Murphy
