phil gardner helen grice
Acoustic guitar pop, with a bit of folk, and the occasional thrash metal guitar just for shock value.
The band 'Phil Gardner' was formed from a collection of cells and regressive genes which burst forth from my mother's womb in 1973. I didn't pick up a guitar until almost 18 years later, by which time I was already playing drums in a couple of bands, both of which sank without trace, despite having that most important of qualities - a cool name. I turned to singing and songwriting, only to discover I couldn't get a tune out of my drums to accompany myself. Hence the shift towards guitar. I started seriously writing songs in 1993. Ten years later I find myself in the inexplicable position of not being a worldwide music phenomenon. By day I'm a writer of plays, films and comedy scripts. By night I'm asleep. But somewhere in the middle I still find time to write the occasional song, which I insist on recording in my living room with a battered old microphone, in an attempt to keep it real.

Story behind the song
This is a new recording of an old song of mine. On the first take I wasn't happy with the vocals, so I recorded them again. Sadly, take two was no better, which left me facing the horrifying prospect of having to make a third attempt, thus risking the postponement of lunch. Fortunately, being a klutz, I accidently hit the wrong button and mixed together my two unsatisfactory vocal tracks, only to find I quite liked the result. So here it is. It just goes to show, sometimes two wrongs do make a right.
Lyrics
When the wind blows to nothingness, I will be, I will be, When the sun shines to happiness, Let me see what I can be, 'Cause I always see you there, With your eyes an empty stare, Looking at me, the silent plea, Since the day you went away, From those tracks where we would stay, Your soul is free, you've been set free. Over the railway tracks with you, I'll be, Over the railway tracks with you, Over the railway tracks with you, I'll be, Over the railway tracks with you. So I'll wait for togetherness, Watching by, watching by, But the echoes of emptiness, Make me sigh, I hear your cry, 'Cause as time reveals the pain, The shadows in the rain, Will always lie forever by, Now you're gone across the track, And you're never coming back, But you won't die in my mind's eye. Over the railway tracks with you, I'll be, Over the railway tracks with you, Over the railway tracks with you, I'll be, Over the railway tracks with you, With you I'll be right by your side, I'll never go, I'll take you there again, Over the railway tracks with you, I'll be, Over the railway tracks with you.
