Story behind the song
I lived in Florida where the sun is extremely hot during the summer months, but if you just go into the shade or shadow of a tree there is a twenty degree difference in the shadow than in the sun. I wanted to try and use that correlation between the hot sun, being sin, and the cool shadow - The Cross of Christ.
Lyrics
(Verse 1)
When sin, like the desert sun, beats down upon my weary soul,
When it burns the strength from my life like the embers of a burning coal.
It cuts me off from happiness and takes away my peace
That’s when sin, like the scorching sun, causes my joy to cease.
(Chorus)
But here in the shadow of the cross, it’s cool and it’s refreshing
Here in the shadow of the cross, my sins have been forgiven
And in the shadow of the cross, is the comfort that I long for.
In the shadow of the cross, my sin can claim me no more.
(Verse 2)
When sin, like the sweltering heat, causes grief upon my heart
It cripples my will to live, and boils my faith apart
It makes me question my belief, and brings me to my knees,
Oh, the burning flame of sin is hot, and the need for relief is strong in me.
