Here she sits in cancer’s hold
Fighting pain she can’t control
Disease consumes a happy memory
When she could smile
When she was free
She’s frightened of her pale skin
Then her boyfriend rushes in
In battle with her fading memory
She wonders who
this boy could be
So uniform that it’s nearly serene,
Her last days become a funeral scene
Mourners look out to the setting sun
Completely lost
Every one
And now the rest of us must simply wait
In a sleepwalk through our love and hate
When time comes for the love to die
Then so must you
So must I
