Papa Donald, they call me. I'm a bard --now that's a term you don't hear everyday anymore. I enjoy the craft of music and I love sharing it with whomever God br
Let me introduce myself. I'm "Papa Donald!" I'm a musician, composer and writer. I've been havin' fun workin' with music and words and wrappin' 'em around feelin's and ideas for about eighty years --and by now I'm gettin' pretty good at it! I guess basically I'm a poet-philosopher, what in the old days you'd call a BARD! But it's no big deal. I can't help it! It's just who I am and what I do. I'm a pianist, singer, composer, arranger, musical director, song-writer, actor, author, a playwright (on occasion) AND A DAD! But to me, it's all part of the same thing. Nowadays, bein' "Papa Donald" covers it all! I'm still doin' it and I'm gonna keep on doin' it 'cause I love it and it's my way to say "Thank you, LORD!" and, maybe, pass on some of the fun and good times I've had and the good stuff I've learned over the years! So that's what this website is all about! ALOHANUILOAKAKOU! I hope you'll come back and see the crazy-quilt of surprises and goodies I've got for you! I promise you won't be bored!

Story behind the song
Written in 1959, the intent of this song was originally to encapsulate my strong feelings regarding Apartheid. While playing piano during a New Year's Eve party, I included this new song. A lady who was politically connected with Ossie Davis heard the song and suggested that I take it to him. I met Mr. Davis in New York City and played it for him in his dressing room during a performance of one of his plays between scenes. He liked it, and asked me to make an arrangement for Harry Belafonte to perform. I went right to work on the arrangement and completed within a few days. I gave it to Mr. Davis who in turn gave it to Mr. Belafonte --and that's the last I ever heard of it. Weeks later, Mr. Davis told me that Mr. Belafonte loved it, but had misplaced it. By this time, the now famous "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had already been made. Over the years, the song has appeared in several scores (including the 1970 musical "Not So Distant A Dream") that were never produced. This recording was sung by Dave Caylor as the finale to his "Patriot Voices" CD in 2003.
Lyrics
Someday there's gonna be a world Where you're free to walk proud With the sun on your back And joy in your soul Where you're free to speak your mind Say it big and out loud Make it heard, east and west From pole to pole And it's not so distant a dream Not so distant a day Not so far away As it may seem Someday there's gonna be a world Free and friendly and strong And it won't be too long Not too long
