Rock 'n' Rollin' Semicolon
A Schoolhouse Rock type song about the semicolon. I recorded this song for an English class assignment my senior year of high school.
Chonk is a musician who resides in Santa Cruz, CA.
Story behind the song
I wrote this song for my 12th grade English class. I heard somewhere that the teacher still plays it for her classes these days.
Lyrics
So, you have two separate sentences
You want to combine
Well I'll tell you how
If you give me the time
The solution is simple
The answer is clear
If you can use the semi-colon
Baby, have no fear
Because commas are helpful
And useful too
But there’s only so much
One little comma can do
A comma can’t make
Two related sentences one
You’re going to need that extra dot
A semicolon
It’s the grammar patrollin’
Sentence controllin’
Heart and soulin’
Badly swollen
Ozone holin’
Totem polin’
Rock ‘n’ rollin’
Semicolon
Some people think
That they use it right; they’re wrong
So I’ll give you some examples;
They’re here in this song
Sam went to the store;
He left his pants at home
You’re making me mad;
I’m gonna hang up the phone
I have a good friend;
His name is Clark
He said “semicolons
Go outside the quotation marks”;
I know he’s right.
Everybody rock on!
Get ready to boogie down
With semicolon
It’s the grammar patrollin’
Sentence controllin’
Too often stolen
Playin' violin
Birth controllin’
Good at bowlin’
Rock ‘n’ rollin’
Semicolon
My friend, there’s one other way
It can be done
Between elements of a series
Where at least one
Contains a comma
(guitar solo)
It’s the grammar patrollin’
Sentence controllin’
public pollin’
Pigeon holin’
See how it’s strollin’
Over hot coal ‘n’
Real high rollin’
No self-controllin’
Casserolin’
Toilet bowlin’
Breakin’ parole ‘n’
Field goalin’
Very cajolin’
Bullet holin’
Rock ‘n’ rollin’
Semicolon
