singer songwriter acoustic folk british guitarist song celtic traditional fingerstyle scottish scotland guitar kelso
Artist picture
Solo singer-songwriter and tunesmith playing British fingerstyle steel and nylon string guitar, and historic instruments. Scots and Irish influences.
I've been writing and playing songs and tunes since teenage years in folk clubs and pubs. I co-organise the Kelso Friday night live music sessions at the Cross Keys (hosted singaround 7.45-10pm) and Cobbles Inn (10-12pm open mic with The Cobbles Band) with the help of many friends. All welcome! Visit us at kelsofolkandlive co uk. It is worth clicking on the tab because the sound quality of my tracks is far higher than the auto player on this page. Many can be streamed or downloaded at 320KBps and the enhancement for solo guitar/voice far exceeds the benefit you get for highly compressed band recordings. My recordings are full dynamic, not compressed. Just select Hi-Fi for the first song, and an MP3 high bitrate window will open - you will still get a sequence of songs. Most of my downloads are free, but some 320KBps tracks are paid-for. These are selected because they make up my main instrumental album. I now have a YouTube page and have started doing some video recordings for fun: @daviddkilpatrick I have mainly played Lowden guitars since 1999. I current play a 1985 S5FN (nylon string), 1986 S22 (jumbo O-size mahogany/cedar), and 1995 S32 (small body rosewood/spruce). I also play my own 1997-built Martin 'kit' Grand Auditorium rosewood/spruce, a Sigma OM-T, Furch Little Jane, Tacoma Papoose, Guild 8-string baritone, Vintage V880 parlour guitar and Gordon Giltrap signature model, a Troubadour mahogany/spruce classical and an Adam Black 12-string. And that's just the guitars... also viola, mandolin, mandola, waldzither, bouzouki, Appalachian dulcimer, low D whistle, keyboards.

Story behind the song
This has one of the best singing tunes in the Scottish ballad tradition. It is a 20th century rediscovery, of course, and popular in many styles. This is just a plain guitar and voice arrangement with emphasis on the meaning and clarity of the ballad words.
Lyrics
Annochie is bonnie and there lives my love My love lies on him and can not remove It cannot remove for all that I have done For I never will forget my love Annochie For Annochie Gordon he's bonnie and he's braw He'd entice any woman that ever he saw He'd entice any woman and so he has done me And I never will forget my love Annochie It's down and came her father, he's standing at the door, Saying Jeannie you are trying the tricks of a whore You care nothing for the man who cares so very much for thee You must marry Lord Saltoun and leave Annochie For Annochie Gordon he's barely but a man Although he may be pretty, but where are his lands? For the Saltoun lands are broad and his towers they run high You must marry Lord Saltoun and leave Annochie With Annochie Gordon I'd beg for my bread Before I marry Saltoun his gold to my head With gold unto my head and gowns fringed tae my knee I will die if I don't get my love Annochie And you who are my parents to church you may me bring But unto Lord Saltoun I'll never bear a son To a son or daughter I'll never bow my knee And I'll die if I don't get my love Annochie Jeannie was married, from church was brought home And she and her maidens so merry should have been When she and her maidens so merry should have been She goes into her chamber and cries all alone Come to bed my Jeannie, my honey and my sweet To style you my mistress it would be so sweet Be it mistress or Jeannie it's all the same to me But in your bed, Lord Saltoun, I never will lie It's down and came her father, he's spoken with renown, Saying you who are her maidens come loosen up her gowns And she's fallen to the floor and straight down to his knee Saying father look I'm dying for my love, Annochie The day that Jeannie married was the day that Jeannie died The day that young Annochie came home on the tide And down came her maidens a-wringing of their hands Saying O you've been so long, you've been so long on the sands So long on the sands, so long upon the flood They have married your Jeannie and now she lies dead You who are her maidens, come take me by the hand, And lead me to the chamber where my love she lies in And he kissed her cold lips till his heart had turned to stone And he died in the chamber that his love she lay in
