Part 1 of my two-part piece. (Together, they exceeded the maximum upload limit of 10MB per song, so I feature them separately but in order).
[the following is copied and pasted from my main page] As a composer, I'm pretty much a composer on the side. When I have an idea, I write it down and go with it, but I don't focus all my musical energy into being a composer. I actually go through phases, or "seasons" as I would call if, of composing. I may compose very solidly for a few months on end and then not compose a thing for months on end. I am very much passionate about the compositions I do write. I also begin virtually every composition with pencil and staff paper, only transferring it onto an electronic medium (such as MakeMusic(tm)/Finale(tm)) as it becomes a finished product.

Story behind the song
This is a D minor theme and variations combined with a piece I wrote a few years earlier called "Determination." See, the variations are separated by a suspenseful A dominant-seventh chord, and I was absolutely clueless how to make a fitting Coda, so I tacked on a previous Dm piece and made it fit :). Theme: Quarter notes Var. 1: 8th notes Var. 2: 8th note triplets Var. 3: Drunken, rampaging pirate *yarrr* Var. 4: "Anything goes" variation that is nearly impossible in parts (definitely needs at least three people and two pianos to do everything)
